What are effective backup strategies during DNS migration?
Setting a low TTL is a great idea to ensure that downtime is minimised during the DNS cutover. I just want to add that you can verify that the lower TTL is in effect by again using the dig tool. For example dig +noall +answer a google.com. The second column will show you the live TTL in seconds. For a 5 minute TTL, expect to see a value counting down from 300.

What are effective backup strategies during DNS migration?
I would like to expand on the use of dig for testing the migration, this is a good idea. You can test that the DNS is resolving by using dig @<IP address of new nameserver>, followed by the type of record i.e. A record, and the DNS to look up. This should give you the expected result, if not you can investigate why.

What are effective backup strategies during DNS migration?
I would like to add that it would be useful to ensure that DNS records are set up on the new Nameservers prior to cut over. It would also help that no new records (A, CNAME, MX, TXT etc) are added to the exisiting Nameservers prior to the cut over, this will ensure that there is consistent snapshot of the current record state.
